In this instructable I will show you how to make a very simple and cheap wood burning stove with a 55 gallon steel barrel.This can be used in a garage, pole barn, workshop, cottage or home, for heating throughout the winter, or on a pool heater, with just a simple conversion.You need some products to get started.First of all, you need a steel barrel of 55 gallons.You can choose a sealed lid or a removable lid bucket.I prefer a sealed cover for rigidity.You can find these things in craigslist, a local scrap yard or an industrial park, with almost nothing.You need two barrels if you are going to build a double barrel stove.The second thing you need is a barrel stove kit.You can get single or double barrel kit from Vogelzang or US.Stove.The link to the barrel furnace kit and optional accessories is as follows.Volgezang kitU.S.The stove kitDouble Barrel KitCast cast iron grateBarrel stove hot plate kitPaper log makerThe kit comes with an overall door assembly.The best way is to pick the best end of your bucket, stand upright, and then set the door assembly at the end.Open the door and use the marker pen to open the inside of the door to the barrel.Obviously, make sure it's centered on the barrel end.If your bucket has two bundles, the bottom is larger and the top of the door is smaller.This is where some power tools come in handy, but I'm sure you can do this with a saw and drill bit if needed.First drill a hole in a corner of the marking area.Then, use a reciprocating saw, a jigsaw puzzle, a hacksaw or a grinding wheel along your wire cut until your door hole is completed.Put the door back on the barrel and check to make sure the door fits.If so, mark each hole on the hole around the edge of the door and drill with the right size drill.Fix the door to the barrel with the attached bolts and nuts.I have a video here about this building.It is found that it is better to erect the legs on a flat surface at this time, and then place the barrel on the legs.Adjust as needed to make the door straight and then mark the screw hole of the leg using the mark.Flip the barrel back and drill holes for the legs using the right size drill bit.Fix the legs on the barrel with the included screws.Now that your bucket is sitting on your leg, you can place the flue assembly near the back of the top bucket.Make sure the screws are centered and then mark the holes of the screws.Drill these holes with a suitable size drill bit and connect the flue assembly with the included screws.If a double barrel stove is built, you will install the auxiliary leg bracket next and connect the flue bracket between the two barrels.Then install the final flue assembly at the top of the second barrel at the front end.Stove pipe -You can find the stove pipe to connect on Craigslist, or find the new stove pipe in your local hardware, farm store or big box home improvement store.Now that your stove is all put together, it's better to make a quick fire inside and let it burn quite hot until any paint or grease is burned from the surface (I skipped this first step, you can see that the paint didn't stick well on me for the first time.After cooling, wipe the outside of the barrel and paint the entire barrel and furnace pipe using BBQ paint of your chosen color.There are several options here.First option -You can buy a grate on Amazon and ship it to you.These are awesome, cast iron and heavy duty.Cast iron grate-option -I made a cheap grate with two 3/4 black pipes (gas pipes) and some hardware cloth or wire with what I was lying on.Third option -Find an old barbecue on the side of the road and take grates from it.The Standard Gas Grill will fit perfectly from one side to the other in these barrels, about 2-3 inch of dust and air under them.You have now built your own wood burning stove for less than $75, which can be warmed up in your store, annex building, cabin or home (in some cases ).I also convert it to a pool heater and use the boiler type system to heat my garage and you can check the link below to get the build video.More videos, DIY projects and ways to build the pool heater outdoor wood burning garage HeaterBarrel stove VideoLook at us at www.Simple Life.
