replacement stainless steel grill grates DIY- Portable Toolbox Grill- Improved!
My thoughts on family vacations do not include luxury hotel rooms or fine dining rooms. My husband and I are happy campers. they sleep under the stars and have a quiet campfire to illuminate the night. We travel to the south every autumn.of-the-Border to sunny lower California Sur.The 3-4-day hiking usually includes overnight camping and outdoor activitiesThe barbecue was accompanied by territory...Wherever the territory is.When I first saw a portable toolbox online, I liked everything about it.I'm not surprised to hear a familiar heartThe voice said, "you can do it!"...The rest is history.Well...Anyway, my history.;-) Here's how I can build my new/old, 100% recycled, portable $8 $19 $ toolbox BBQ grills, these improvements are documented in Step 912.Special thanks to Halvarson for showing my portable toolbox grill in the summer DIY project article published in Wired on January.COM.I am honored!;-) I love my Dremel spin tool...But when it comes to operating huge, hateful limbs, I see the dying that is coming --Cut off power tools. My DH (dilhart) is a retired builder and is very proficient in these meats, which is a good thingEat electric beastBesides...Someone's taking pictures, right?;-) Grill used in this project is recycled. Both are steel. One was cut off from the grill of the old grill, and the other was cut off from the old fridge. Both devices are already DOA, so everything is fine! It's time to start the threat.tools!Wear safety glasses???CHECK!!!The inside of the toolbox measures 8 "17" at the top and 8 "19" at the bottom ".It has a beautiful compartment welded inside and is very useful for getting a pair of pliers.DH uses a reciprocating saw to cut the two grill to the corresponding size and remove the excess crossbar. The lower charcoal grate requires a short "leg" to be lifted up from the bottom of the toolbox. To do this, he held the 1 "at one end of the bar with a vise and then bent the whole grate.Easy-peasy...At least that's what he did.;-) I want to have enough clearance between the grill and the closed cover of the toolbox.Drill 2 pairs of parallel holes down from the top of the toolbox; One pair at each end.Positioning: Insert the grill row into the hole at one end and push it in.Then, the other end of the grate is put down, inserted into the hole opposite and passed through. The gap in the grill row is 2 ", so I can cover the barbecue on most meats.(Sorry if my instructions here are as clear as mud. Please look at the picture.) Use a right angle grinder with a grinding disc to smooth the sharpness left by the drilling. At first I thought I would only handle a few layers of painting.I was so excited when the aerosal remover started working, it was amazing...Until the paint layer No. 3 stops cooling...or was it 4?I lost count. There are multiple paint layers in this toolbox and there is no "spray" paint at all...They will not leave in peace!I scratched, I wired, I bought the toolbox for less moneythan-The results were satisfactory.8-/Time to pull out a big gun...This is what I should have done in the first place.(Life and study!)The right-The angle mill and the sand plate have been processed quickly for stubborn residual paint inside and outside.Except for the inner corners that the disc could not reach, the toolbox was beautifully cleaned.I am proud to inform you that I stripped the paint from all bymyself!I managed to overcome my ergalele ktriphobia (fear of power tools and I don't pronounce them either )...It's actually interesting...Kind of like a temporary madness!;-The stripped toolbox is so beautiful...and so shiney!lol...TOO shiney! It's time to paint the outside with high.Heat the stove paint and add some legs.I used high-Heat (to 1200 F) The stove paint outside the toolbox.I want to keep this prototype as simple/low cost as possible.I know...The black one is a bit boring, but I already have this sand product on my hand.High-there are several brandsThermal enamel and ceramic engine coating (paint) on the market ).They have a variety of different colors and finishes, but they are almost-free.;-) Be sure to check the temperature specification before purchasing any high temperatureheat paint. This is not-size-Suitable for all products. Some fuels, such as charcoal, burn hotter than ordinary charcoal coal balls.Experienced wood such as legumes and shrubs and oak trees also burns hot...and faster. That is, if my toolbox grill gets one and a halfThe truck or being swept away by a tornado, I will definitely appreciate the new building with a smooth red or blue ceramic finish.DH drilled 4 holes at the bottom of the toolbox; One in each corner. He fixed the stove bolt "leg" in the hole with ratchet, socket and openingend wrench;Leave a 4 "rise between the ground and the bottom of the toolbox. The Bolt legs are strong but smooth.footed.Not-so-It's good for the back panel barbecue I planned. The foot needs to slip.Proof of being able to withstand some heat "boots ".I found some heavy rubber plugs in my cabin. They cling to their feet, which is a huge advantage.I heat-Tested in an oven at 400 degrees F for 12 minutes. It is only a little short for wear;Slightly deformed but still soft after cooling.Rubber "Boots" will work very well. She said with her fingers crossed.;-) To prevent the boots from getting knocked off, I put Sugru in the well around the plug and let them be treated overnight.(Sugru is heat-For clarity (and sanity), anti-365 F), some pictures in this step are marked.;-) All it takes to finish this project is stove paint (sprayed on the bottom and legs of the toolbox )...almost.I have some small finishing touches to add.→ Ventilation: 2 holes are drilled at each end of the toolbox grille, located directly below the charcoal grille/shelf.Fixed Grill: The upper grill is removable and slides into the appropriate position from the inside of the toolbox. In fact, the challenge I face is to make sure it is in place safely.Just "be careful" won't cut it.I am not very elegant. The easiest solution is to insert the magnet and place it in the compartment where the oven bar slides. The grate bar rests on the magnet insert and stops. The other end of the grate bar then effectively "locks" firmly in place. When the grate needs to be removed, all I have to do is push the magnet insert to one side and slide the grill grate back and out.Problem solved.I would also like to be able to seal the vent holes during transportation. The magnet also seems to be the best option.More Sugru: to make the magnets more visible (and to help prevent them from being misplaced) I applied a thin layer of white sugru around them.Because this Grill is a small hand-There is no doubt that Weber, who is more general than you, will be my BGF.Best BBQ friends.Unfortunately, the potholes are lost...The wrong place...Occasionally, cheating will also be stolen!(j/k.I just wanted to see if you noticed.-) To 100% insurance, I would never be a gorilla without my BGFAs shown in the figure, stick the magnet to each pit.If the Gorilla Glue * is not fixed, I will have a meticulous pit surgery and sew the magnet inside.* Update: Gorilla Glue did not survive in the heat test. The operation was successful.;-Roast beef tenderloin and baked potatoes...This is something for dinner! My top-secret wipe (steak brushed with EVOO, generously sprinkled with garlic seasoning salt and rubbed with 1 t brown sugar on both sides) is really top-secret.I'm sorry...I just can't reveal everything.I can report the beautiful results of my toolbox grill!I think I can let the photos speak by themselves.;-Special thanks to my husband...Steveastrouk, Burf, Vyger and Iceng have helped me with this fun project! This Instructable project does not claim to be the best or only way to build a homemade portable toolbox grill...This is just my way.I will continue to check the local thrift store in case the fridge grate is not supported and I will check it again...knock-on-wood.;-) If you have suggestions or comments (other than "don't quit!), Please feel free to share.;-)UPDATE!Thank you very much for coming, thank you again for coming! The next few steps are the improvements I made. The metal handle on this grill is very hot...Even just sitting in the sun. This definitely needs to be remedied.I cut part from the oak broom handle and hollowed out part with a drill bit.Next, I cut the notch on the lower side with dremel. The metal handle is cut diagonally into half and reconnected to the oak handle with a syringe filled with JB quick soldering.I use a strong rubber band as a vise.Taaa Daaa...New, safe, hotproof handle!I am very satisfied with the performance of this grill and I have decided that a new paint job will be part of this job --deserved make-over.I found red rustcaliper well diameter (engine) paint with heat resistance of 900 degrees.I didn't want to peel off the existing paint (again), I tested the underside of the grill and sprayed several layers of clamp paint on the top of the stove paint. After hot testNo peeling and blistering.(yay!;-) The color of the clamp paint changes from bright red to brick red-I prefer red!The initial design limited my ability to control the airflow of the grill.I only have two choices...Turn on or off....I want a medium to be happier.I prefer "happy ".) I drilled a hole on the side of the grill and attached a small openingEnd wrench with furnace head bolts, washers and nuts. The lid can now be secured and I can control the airflow better.Since this grill is portable, I can position it according to the wind direction or even the rain!I'm a nice grill chef, but I 've had a lot of practice. My husband's situation is completely different. The person has countless amazing skills, but the barbecue is not one of them.He can ruin the most beautiful piece of meat without even trying!(Sorry, honey...but it's true.) To help him share the responsibility of the grill, I bought a $5 grill thermometer to stick it in front of the grill with JB fast weld.I can't guarantee that I will.medium-rare Rib-But at least this is a step in the right direction!Enjoy your summer and happy BBQ!
