The upper they bought four years ago in the Lyon Springs area.
When they first saw 1969 houses on 4 acres, they were delayed by its condition and decided it was not their house.
But it's been in their minds all the time.
"I came home from school a few days later and I said, 'You know Larry, you'll think I'm crazy, but I 've been thinking about that house.
Debbie recalled: "He started laughing and took out a piece of paper from his briefcase, where he took the area and basically outlined a kitchen and what we could do with it.
They took another look and made a proposal.
Because their 25-year Leon Valley house sold faster than they expected, Patlovanys had to move into their new house and live in it during construction.
At first, Larry said, they often worked.
"The first thing we do is tear everything off.
"We took down the floor," he said . ".
The walls also collapsed.
They are responsible for "vandalism" and hire people to handle most of the remodeling tasks.
"The area is actually three rooms and now includes a seating area and a dining space," Debbie said of the kitchen . ".
"We had an idea and we wanted it to be an open room and then one of our friends who designed the kitchen and bathroom actually designed the room for us.
"We are here most of the time," said Debbie, who loves cooking and baking . ".
The couple chose natural slate tiles for the floor, drawers for most of the lower cabinets, stainless steel appliances and granite countertops
There is a gas cooker even on the island.
In the winter morning, the fireplace in the living room is on fire, a cozy corner with two leather recliners offering a peaceful place to read or relax.

Old grandson Nate has his own wooden desk on the other wall.
A few years ago, the couple bought it at a school auction in McAllen for their two sons Matt and Chris.
The natural slate in the kitchen spills into the entrance, into the living room, and is used by the fireplace on the rock wall.
The couple chose wood boards for the floor and gray-brown paint for the walls.
They maintain a neutral tan throughout the house.
The summer vacation gave them time to remodel the bathroom, and they finished it before Debbie went back to be a small school director and Larry went back to high school drama teaching.
The second bathroom of the house is the next one on the renovation list, followed by the re-laying of the driveway.
"It is now and will continue to be an ongoing work," Larry noted . ".
